On December 25th, 1999, Derek E. Baron left the United States thinking he would come back from Southeast Asia in three months. His idea was to backpack around Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and go back home. But that trip back never happened. He fell in love with exploring the globe, and has been traveling from country to country for more than 20 years now.
In order to be able to travel around the world, he began working on cruise ships and saving money, all while writing an eBook that would later sell out within twenty minutes of publication online. Then, in 2009, Derek created his blog, Wandering Earl, (since his middle name is Earl) and started writing blog posts about every travel topic he could come up with. He then published a second eBook, and finally created Wandering Earl Tours, in 2012, after so many people asked him for recommendations on what to do in their travels.
He has gone to more than 100 countries on six continents as he has lived, traveled, worked and volunteered all around the globe. He records his traveling experiences on his blog, and his avid readers are always asking for more information regarding different places and topics. He also posts recommendations for places to stay, useful travel objects to buy, and tips and advice on what to do while traveling. He divides his blog into topics, and whether it is travel tales, interesting people, personal stuff, work and travel, perspectives or countries, etc., you can be sure to find an interesting blog post to read every time you click on his page. Wandering Earl has really become a prominent figure in the traveling community, because not only are his blog and his eBooks popular, he also manages to make Wandering Earl Tours a successful business.
Derek now works online while traveling, running his blog and his tour company. He has said that he likes to focus on the human interactions and the life lessons learned along the way, which are two aspects of travel that keep him going after more than 20 years. And these are also two aspects of travel that we wish to share in our blog, One Ticket, One Story. The purpose of what he does, the blog and the tours, is simple, he says. He wants to use his own experience to prove that long-term travel does not have to be a crazy fantasy. It can, and should be, a realistic lifestyle option instead. It is his core mission. Through his own experience, from the amazing events and rewarding interactions to the struggles and challenges, he aims to provide a realistic and honest account of what long-term travel really is about, and, if you want to live that way yourself, he gives you certain tools so that you can do so. So, let’s go wander with Earl!
